This isn’t clickbait. The DEA (the government agency charged with keeping drugs off our streets and out of our country) has detailed instructions on how to grow the flower that produces opium (Papaver Somniferum, aka the breadseed poppy), how to harvest the opium, and finally, how to convert raw opium into pure heroin. It would be funny if it weren’t so ridiculous. The same people who would lock you or me up and throw away the key for growing a pot plant have published a step-by-step guide to making heroin.
“Why would I publish this,” I hear you asking. Several reasons, one of which is that the information is readily available online as we speak. The other primary reason is to draw attention to the fact that the DEA, like most government organizations, is so corrupt and ineffective that they publish the directions on their website to actively subterfuge their operations. It’s ridiculous.
I have uploaded the file (in PDF format) to this article for your reference, but it’s not exactly difficult to find on the internet. Certain parts were either omitted or intentionally left vague, but with some additional research, we were able to ascertain the details.
This document covers the entire process, from cultivating the poppies and extracting the morphine, all the way to explaining how to acetylate the morphine and refine the finished product into pure heroin. The entire process can be done in about 75 days with about $40 worth of chemicals and various equipment.
We at antiprohibit.org haven’t tried it, but the irony is astounding. If it’s so simple, it begs the question:
Why haven’t more people tried to do it?

The answer is probably a combination of several factors. One of which is most likely a lack of knowledge. Another reason is that it’s still illegal (although this is likely not a real deterrent). Still another deterrent could be that some of the later stages involve some relatively dangerous chemicals – and we’re not talking about drug overdose dangers. Chloroform is used to refine the product, which is both intoxicating and explosive. In our opinion, the single biggest reason, however, is that it takes time. Most heroin users are addicted to it and don’t have the time, land, money or energy (they’re still being persecuted for their medical condition) required to produce heroin.
If, like us, even after hearing about all the dangers involved, you’re still curious, read on…
How to Make Heroin
The following is taken from the step-by-step instructions, as published by the DEA, PBS, and other sources available on the internet

Step One;
Grow the Poppies and Harvest the Opium

- Plant some Breadseed Poppies
- Keep them alive
- Enjoy the flowers
- Wait until the petals fall off and the seed pod begins to swell – about 75 days from planting to harvest
- Cut (or “lance”) the seed pod, being careful not to cut too deeply – between one-sixteenth to an eighth of an inch
- Collect the raw opium latex exudate from the cut pods. If you’re too impatient, you can smoke this directly once it’s been dried. It’s about 10% morphine and 7% codeine by weight
Step Two:
Opium to Morphine and Codeine Base

- Add the opium to a pot of boiling water
- Skim any plant material off the top
- Add slaked lime to the water until you see the impurities fall to the bottom of the pot.
- Scoop the water out, saving it in another container (this solution has all of the active alkaloids) and leave the sludge at the bottom (this sludge is the other alkaloids in opium, such as thebaine, the precursor of fentanyl) – we’re not interested in making fentanyl – fentanyl sucks.
- Filter the solution, and reheat it, being careful not to allow it to boil again.
- Add ammonium chloride to adjust the pH of the solution from 8 to 9.
- Allow the solution to cool. Within two hours, raw morphine and codeine will precipitate out of the solution and sink to the bottom.
- Filter the solution, and discard the liquid (the morphine and codeine will remain in the filter)
- Squeeze out as much water as possible and let the remaining product dry in the sun, or use a vacuum distiller to speed the process up). Do not attempt to speed up the process by heating the product.
- It is advisable but not necessary to repeat the purification process by dissolving the morphine hydrochloride and codeine hydrochloride into water and adding hydrochloric acid. Then, refilter through activated charcoal. You may repeat this process several times, with each one resulting in a more pure product.
Step Three
Morphine Base to Heroin #3

- Add the morphine base to a pot. Add an equal part of anhydrous acetic acid. Heat it carefully to 85°C (any hotter and you will destroy the morphine base). Keep it at this temperature for six hours.
- Add water and chloroform to the mixture. This should cause any impurities to precipitate and fall to the bottom.
- Pour this solution into a new container and add baking soda (sodium carbonate) to the solution. This will make the heroin sink to the bottom.
- Congratulations! You have just made heroin!

So, the next time you enjoy some good heroin (if you can even get any real heroin these days), take a moment to appreciate the hard work that went into the high you’re enjoying.
